About Micheal
Micheal Nelson Byaruhanga is an indigenous storyteller, researcher, filmmaker, and writer of fiction in English.
He was born and raised on the northern shores of Lake Albert, in Uganda’s Albertine Rift. It is here that he learned early that a community is held together not only by laws, but by how people listen to one another, how they care for the earth, and how they remember who they are.
His work asks a simple question: what makes people live well together? Nelson believes that conflict ends not only in negotiations, but in the daily work of building healthy, sustainable communities. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations & Diplomatic Studies, a diploma in Journalism and professional training in Community Education Psychology.
Through story, film, and research, he explores the meeting place of nature and human nature: love, empathy, character, mindfulness, communication, and the quiet virtues that build peace. His work has appeared in the literary journal WordPeace and in the London-based Chartist Magazine.
He is interested in how language and literacy can restore relationships, and how art can teach us to live with justice, equanimity, and care. He brings to the HoH SpeedNetworking event the conviction that art is one of the oldest tools we have for making peace.
